  3. The Allied players nominate at least half of their platoons to be held off the table in Delayed Reserve. These Reserves will arrive along the opposite long table edge.

  5. The Allied players deploys the remaining platoons.
  6. The Axis players nominate at least half of their platoons to be held off the table in Reserve. These Reserves will arrive along either short table edge.
  7. The Axis players then deploys the remaining platoons using the Random Deployment special rule.
  8. Starting with the Allied Players, both sides now deploy any Warrior teams that are not part of a platoon, and all Independent teams. Warriors and Independent teams may also be held in reserve, providing that at least one platoon that they can legally join held in reserve, in this case, they will arrive from reserve with that platoon.

Beginning the Battle

  2. Starting with the Axis players, both sides may make Reconnaissance Deployment moves for any Recce teams they have on table.
  3. The Allied players have the first turn.
  4. As both sides are in Prepared Positions, all platoons may begin the game Dug In.
  5. Remember that the game starts in Thick Morning Fog.

Ending the Battle

The battle ends on or after turn eight when either:
  • the Axis players have taken any of the Objectives at the start of their turn, or
  • the Allied players starts their turn with no Axis teams within 40cm of either Objective.

Deciding Who Won

The Axis players win if the game ended because they started one of their turns holding an Objective. They have broken through the Allied defences and are free to push for Avranches.

Otherwise the Allied players win. The Axis attack has been stopped and an opportunity to encircle the Axis force in France has arisen.

Mission Special Rules

The Mortain mission uses the Thick Morning Fog, Allied Air Support, Reserves (page 268), Delayed Reserves (page 266), Random Deployment (page 261), Immediate Ambush (page 267) and Prepared Positions (page 264) special rules.

Thick Morning Fog
The game begins with a blanket of fog covering the table. Use the Dawn and Night Fighting rules on pages 272 and 273 with the following changes. Teams may move at their Cross-country speed on Roads, instead of being limited to 20cm. The fog does not Conceal teams seen through it, but you must always roll on the Night Visibility Table to determine if you can see an enemy team, even if that team fired its weapons. Start rolling for the fog to lift at turn 4.

Allied Air Support
Once the fog is lifted, Allied Air Support may disregard the safety distance to friendly teams that started on the table and have not moved.
